No hungry kids! School pantry programs
COVID-19 has brought the problems of food insecurity and hunger in our region into sharp focus. As follow-on to our emergency response efforts, we are excited about our new programs to provide “Grab-n-Go” food pantries in two area schools: Abiquiu Elementary and the Coronado High School Complex. Students will have access to wholesome, healthy food in ready-to-eat packaging at school and when leaving school. We are heartened to provide much-needed support kids in these schools!
We so appreciate the support of the superintendents and teachers who are making this possible, and the schools for carving out space for the pantries. Our plan is to have the pantries open up this Fall.
LUCIENTE'S COVID-19 emergency response
From March through July 2020, Luciente delivered weekly bags of food staples to 45 families in need in Abiquiu, Canones, Youngsville, Coyote, and Gallina during the COVID-19 crisis. We also organized the delivery of Help New Mexico bulk food packages to 173 families in northern Rio Arriba County. The weekly delivery of groceries was Phase One of our efforts to alleviate hunger; our last weekly groceries were delivered on July 28 due to schools reopening. During Phase One, Luciente provided 40,000 "cook-at-home" meals to our most vulnerable neighbors. Phase Two of our hunger relief program will open food pantries at Abiquiu Elementary School and at the Coronado School complex in Gallina. This work is now in progress. We expect the pantries to be operating by the Fall of 2020.
Our volunteers, donors, grantors, and community contributions are what make our emergency food deliveries possible. Luciente thanks the Con Alma Foundation, Santa Fe Community Foundation, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, the Los Alamos Community Foundation, the McCune Charitable Foundation, the New Mexico Foundation, the All Together New Mexico Fund, Help New Mexico, Kroger's, Romeros Fruit Stand, over 70 individual donors, and our wonderful group of volunteers. We are strong together.
Luciente is now working with the New Mexico Governor's office as we enter Phase 2 of our program to address childhood hunger in our surrounding communities.
